Position Summary

Install, service, or repair heating and air conditioning systems in the factory or office complex. Perform all duties of Electrician A General in addition to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC). Perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Essential Responsibilities

Major Responsibilities:

  • Test pipe or tubing joints or connections for leaks, using pressure gauge or soap-and-water solution.
  • Test electrical circuits or components for continuity, using electrical test equipment.
  • Repair or replace defective equipment, components, or wiring.
  • Discuss heating or cooling system malfunctions with users to isolate problems or to verify that repairs have corrected malfunctions.
  • Repair or service heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems to improve efficiency, such as by changing filters, cleaning ducts, or refilling non-toxic refrigerants.
  • Perform tasks listed in General Electrician A job description.
  • Evacuate refrigerant from out of service units. Dispose of according to EPA guidelines.
  • May be required to operate industrial trucks (fork trucks, lift trucks, etc.)
  • May train new employees.
  • Follow relevant work instructions and/or SOP.
  • Uses the appropriate electronic or manual system to perform the work of the job or department.
  • May use computer systems to enroll in benefits and interact with other company data systems.

  • Maximum lifting requirement is 40 lbs.; any material of greater weight must be moved using machinery.

  • Must wear required safety equipment such as safety shoes, safety glasses, a hard hat, earplugs, gloves, respirator. (Facial hair cannot interfere with the fit of the respirator.)
  • Frequent outdoor exposure to hot, cold, and/or damp weather.
  • Occasional exposure to dusts, fumes, metal chips, and odors from an industrial environment.
  • Position works at heights of 60 ft. plus.

Position Requirements

  • Education: Equivalent to High School plus 2-3 years of apprenticeship or trade training- including one year of an accredited heating and air-conditioning course.

Experience :

  • 2-4 years- Electrical Construction and Maintenance Experience.
  • Knowledge of Electrical Code requirements for installation and working knowledge of the operation of electrical equipment such as air conditioners, heating units, and heat pumps.
  • Previous experience in general construction preferred.
  • 2 plus years of HVAC experience required.
  • Refrigerant handling license required.


Other Skills/Knowledge/Experience:

  • Reading, writing, speaking, comprehension, and computer skills in the English language, typically developed through high school education or equivalent, with the ability to communicate effectively via all these modes.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing good customer service. This includes meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • Mathematics- Knowledge of basic arithmetic: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division. Must be able to comprehend the meaning of the calculation.
  • Mechanical- Knowledge of machines and tools, including their designs, uses, repair, and maintenance.
  • Design- Know how to read and interpret technical plans, blueprints, drawings, and models.
  • Physics- Knowledge of physical principles, and applications to understanding fluid, material, and atmospheric dynamics, and mechanical, electrical structures and processes.
  • Knowledge as defined in Electrician General A; including Electrical Codes.
  • Knowledge as gained through EPA608 certification to handle and dispose of refrigerant.
  • Equipment Maintenance- Performing routine maintenance on equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Installation- Installing equipment, machines, wiring, or programs to meet specifications.
  • Quality Control Analysis- Conducting tests and inspections of products, services, or processes to evaluate quality or performance.
  • Troubleshooting- Determining causes of operating errors and deciding what to do about it.
  • Operation Monitoring- Watching gauges, dials, or other indicators to make sure a machine or HVAC unit is working properly.
  • Problem Sensitivity- The ability to tell when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong; it does not involve solving the problem, only recognizing there is a problem.
  • Multitasking- Ability to move from task to task while maintaining concentration amid distraction.
  • Teamwork- Coordinating efforts and supporting coworkers to produce the best outcome.
  • Flexibility/Adaptability- Ability to adjust to new conditions and respond effectively to changing environments
